Rodney Warnakula (also written Rodni Warnakula, රොඩ්නි වර්ණකුල) is a Sri Lankan actor, comedian, dubbing artist, and singer, best known for the comic and character songs he performed for the stage dramas and films he appeared in. His full name is Warnakula Patabandige Rodney Priyantha Perera, and he has been one of the most familiar comic voices in Sinhala theatre and television since the early 1980s.
Warnakula was born on 24 April 1961 in Ja-Ela, on the western coast of Sri Lanka. He made his stage debut in 1981 in the drama Tharavo Igilethi, directed by Lucien Bulathsinhala, and went on to perform in dozens of stage plays alongside teleplays and films. Television serials such as Bodima and the comedy work that paired him with other performers turned his timing and his voice into household features.
Unlike singers who build a career in the recording studio first, Rodney Warnakula’s songs grew out of the plays he acted in. Many of the tracks on Lyrics-lk are character numbers and comic pieces written for those productions, which is why titles such as Ha Ha Lande and Pembara Dewi carry the playful, theatrical quality of stage performance rather than radio pop. His novelty and travel-comedy songs, including Japan Rate Jan Jan and Kadeta Palayan Chung Chang, lean on the humour that defined his acting.
For Sri Lankan listeners and the diaspora, the songs of Rodney Warnakula sit at the meeting point of theatre, comedy, and music. Searchers who know him as Rodney Warnakula or as Rodni Warnakula are usually after exactly these stage and novelty pieces, and this page presents them with Sinhala lyrics, transliteration, and English translation in one place.
