This is a woman’s farewell to the man she loves, and the way she says it tells you she is no ordinary woman. She speaks to him as *himiyani*, “my lord,” and she talks about a realm, a crown and a gold chain around her neck, so the voice here is a queen or a noblewoman walking away from her king. The whole song is the moment of leaving, said with terrible calm. If this is what you wish, she tells him, then I will go. No fight, no pleading, just a heart that has already accepted the end.

She opens with the sky cracking open. The thunder and the bursting lightning are not really about the weather, they are her own heart breaking, and she names it plainly in the next line: my heart has been widowed. In Sinhala the word for a widow, *vendambu*, carries the full weight of a woman who has lost her husband, so to say her heart has been widowed while the man is still standing in front of her is to say the love between them has died even though he lives. The marriage of their hearts is over, and she is in mourning for it.

Then she begins to lay everything down. She gives up the crown, and she calls it a crown of thorns, because a queen’s place beside a king she has lost brings only pain now, no honour worth keeping. The gold chain around her neck is almost certainly her wedding necklace, the bond of the marriage itself, and she unbinds it and throws it to the weeping sky. That gesture is the heart of the song, a woman undoing with her own hands the tie that made her his. There is no era, no rhythm left, she says, meaning her time and the music of her life have run out here. All she will carry away is the sweet memory of when they truly loved each other.

What stays with you is the dignity of it. She does not curse him or beg him to change his mind. Instead she promises to lay him to rest inside her dream, the way you bury someone you have lost, and from that grief she will write a thousand small, scribbled songs. The love does not vanish, it turns into something she will quietly carry and keep singing for the rest of her life, even as she closes the door and walks out for good.
