Star prince, you came flying down from the endless sky…

A young woman is singing to the one she loves, and in her telling he is no ordinary man but a “star prince” who came flying down to her out of the endless sky. That image sets the whole mood. In Sinhala love songs the sky and the stars stand for something far above the everyday, distant, shining, almost out of reach, so calling him a star prince is her way of saying he feels heaven-sent, too good and too bright to belong to her ordinary world. Yet here he is, come down to find her.

The feeling that runs through it is the old idea of saṃsāra, the cycle of birth and rebirth that shapes how Sri Lankans think about deep love. She believes the two of them were together in an earlier life and were torn apart, and that in this life she has chased him down again to find his face. When she sings of getting tangled in the swirling wind of love, that wind is the pull of longing itself, something she cannot resist or escape.
