Nirmala Ranathunga (also spelled Nirmala Ranatunga), නිර්මලා රණතුංග, is a Sri Lankan playback and stage singer whose warm, controlled soprano carried a long run of Sinhala duets and solo numbers from the era of orchestral playback song. She is best known for the songs she recorded with composer Rohana Weerasinghe and for duets with leading male vocalists of her generation.
Ranathunga built her reputation as a reliable studio and concert voice rather than a chart-chasing pop act, working across radio recordings, films, and live shows. A large part of her recorded output sits within the arrangements of Rohana Weerasinghe, one of the most prolific Sinhala music directors, and her name recurs as the female voice on his duet recordings.
Among those collaborations is Me Prema Seema Malake, sung with Lakshman Wijesekara, and the solo number Ma Wenuwen. She also recorded alongside Sunil Edirisinghe on group numbers from the same orchestral school.
Ranathunga’s catalogue leans toward melodic, lyric-driven Sinhala song, and several of her recordings remain in steady rotation among listeners who seek out the classic playback repertoire. The spelling Nirmala Ranatunga is also widely used for the same artist across lyric and streaming listings.
Ranathunga belongs to a musical household; her daughter, Sewwandi Ranathunga, also performs as a singer, continuing the family’s presence in Sinhala music.
