Lakshman Wijesekara (also spelled Lakshman Wijesekera; ලක්ෂ්මන් විජේසේකර, born Ravindranath Lakshman de Alwis Wijesekera) was a Sri Lankan singer, composer and actor whose recording career ran from the mid-1970s until his death in 2021. He is remembered for warm, melodic songs such as “Sina Pipena Me Wasanthe”, “Dalwu Pahan Dalwee Tibewa” and “Supem Hangum Oben Epa”.
Wijesekara was born on 14 March 1948. He came up through the formal radio-singer system, graduating as a registered vocalist of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in 1975, the same channel that introduced most of his generation of Sinhala performers to a national audience. Music was only one part of his working life: he also acted, directed in advertising and taught, spending roughly eighteen years (1975 to 1993) as a music teacher.
Across a career of more than four decades, Wijesekera moved easily between pop, soul and rhythm-and-blues colours and the Indian classical phrasing that underpins much Sinhala melody. He sang and also played guitar and violin. Several of his best-known recordings are hosted on Lyrics-lk with Sinhala lyrics, transliteration and English translation, including the gentle Sina Pipena Me Wasanthe, which he recorded as a duet with Samitha Mudunkotuwa.
He was equally active as a composer. He wrote the music for Sanda Kinithi Nami Vil Diyata Ebi and Datha Depa Lana, two songs that show the same unhurried, lyric-led sensibility as his vocal work.
Lakshman Wijesekara remained a working artist into his seventies, marking a forty-year career celebration concert in 2018. He died on 12 November 2021 at the age of 73.
