Sathish Perera (also spelled Sathis Perera), සතිෂ් පෙරේරා, full name Thotagamage Sathish Perera, was a Sri Lankan singer, composer and songwriter who carried forward the music of his father, the singer Shelton Perera. Born on 29 May 1969, he is remembered for romantic ballads such as Awasan Liyumai and Maha Muhudu Wimane.
Sathish Perera grew up in a household steeped in Sinhala popular music. His father, Shelton Perera, was a well-known singer, and his younger sister Anuradha Perera went on to her own successful singing career. Although he came from this musical background, Sathish did not formally enter the industry while his father was alive.
Perera began performing after his father’s sudden death in 1989, taking up singing to continue the family legacy. In 1991 he released remixed versions of two of his father’s best-loved songs, Egodaha Yanno and Awasan Liyumai, and the response carried him onto the live stage and into outdoor musical shows. He went on to record two well-received albums, Pem Hasun and Egodaha Yanno. His work drew on pop, soul, rhythm and blues, and Indian classical influences.
Across his catalogue Sathish Perera (Sathis Perera) settled into a warm, melodic ballad style suited to love songs and gentle laments. Listeners still return to numbers like Sundarai Oba Nihanda Belmen, Mihirathi Wasantha and Kandalame Wewa Balanna.
Sathish Perera died on 23 April 2012 in Colombo after living with leukaemia, at the age of 42. His recordings remain part of the Sinhala easy-listening repertoire, and his songs continue to be sought out by listeners at home and across the diaspora.
