Awasan Liyumai Obata Liyanne Lyrics
Awasan liyumai obata liyanne
Wiraha kandulu rendi penen
Kiyawa henduwath mata nam kam na
Mage hitha ada thada ninde
Awasan liyumai obata liyanne
Eya pelendu mangala muduwe
Aadambara kama mama dutumi
Gela wata karagena lemade lagina
Mangala maalya mama dutumi
Abarana andana ranawan ihilu
Sadathanika aadaraya nowe
Kiyawa henguwath mata nam kam na
Mage hitha ada thada ninde
Awasan liyumai obata liyanne
Pena thawath de liyanna keewath
Monawa liyannada meeta wada
Me gena an kisiwaku nehe dan ne
Wena deegeka giya obata wada
Abarana andana ranawan ihilu
Sadathanika aadaraya nowe
Kiyawa henguwath mata nam kam na
Mage hitha ada thada ninde
Awasan liyumai obata liyanne ...Awasan Liyumai Obata Liyanne Lyrics English Translation
It’s the last letter I’m writing to you
You’ll see the tears of separation blurring the ink
Even if you read it, it makes no difference to me now
My heart today is in a deep, hard sleep
It’s the last letter I’m writing to you
On her finger, the wedding ring
I saw the pride of it
Arms around his neck, leaning close in tenderness
I saw the wedding garland too
The gold ornaments she wears, the jewellery
That is not love that lasts forever
Even if you read it, it makes no difference to me now
My heart today is in a deep, hard sleep
It’s the last letter I’m writing to you
Even if you told me there’s still more to write
What more is there to write than this
No one else knows about this now
More than you, who went off to another home
The gold ornaments she wears, the jewellery
That is not love that lasts forever
Even if you read it, it makes no difference to me now
My heart today is in a deep, hard sleep
It’s the last letter I’m writing to you …

Awasan Liyumai Obata Liyanne Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man sits down to write one last letter to the woman he loved, the woman who has just married someone else. He says it plainly in the first line: this is the final time he will ever write to her. The tears running down his face smudge the words as he goes, and he knows it. He even tells her that whether she reads this letter or not no longer matters to him, because something inside him has already shut down. That is the weight he opens with, the calm of someone who has stopped fighting.
The middle of the song is him replaying her wedding, the thing he could not stop watching. He saw the ring on her finger and the proud way she wore it. He saw her arms around her new husband’s neck, leaning into him, and he saw the wedding garland around them. These are not cruel images, they are just true, and that is what hurts. Then he reaches the line the whole song turns on: all that gold she wears, the bangles and the jewellery, that is not the love that lasts forever. In Sinhala weddings the gold ornaments and the garland are the visible signs of a marriage, the shine everyone admires. He is saying the shine is not the same as a love that stays. She has the ornaments. What they once had, he believes, was the real thing, and no gold can stand in for it.
By the last verse he has nothing left to add. He asks what more there could possibly be to write than this, and answers himself: nothing. He says no one else knows about any of this anymore, only him, now that she has gone off to live in another household. That phrase, going to another home, is the ordinary Sri Lankan way of describing a woman marrying and leaving for her husband’s family, and here it carries the whole loss in four small words. She has a new life and a new house. He has a letter he will never send to anyone.
What stays with you is that “hard sleep” of the heart he keeps coming back to. It is not anger and it is not begging. It is a man who has decided to feel nothing because feeling anything would be unbearable, writing it all down one last time so he can finally put the pen down.
