Geeyakin Kese Lyrics
(geeyakin kese
kiyam situm laye
ran ruwan genella
ma langin thiyala
noillanu adare
noillanu adare.....//)
neth obe nama bala inne ai
so susum hela ma inne ai
mithuran se api jeewithe ekwemu......
geeyakin kese
wenin kenek soya sinasenako
ma obe sitin makalannako
atheethaye katha maka dama sinasemu......
Geeyakin Kese Lyrics English Translation
(How could I ever say it
in a song, these thoughts in my heart?
You bring me gold and jewels
and lay them down beside me,
but don’t ask me for love,
don’t ask me for love…..//)
Why do you keep your eyes lowered, just looking down?
Why do I sit here letting out heavy, sorrowful sighs?
Let us join our lives together as friends……
How could I ever, in a song
Go find someone else and smile again
Erase me from your heart
Let us wipe away the stories of the past and smile……
How could I, in a song…/

Geeyakin Kese Song Meaning and Interpretation
A woman is gently turning down someone who loves her, and the whole song is her trying to soften a no. He has brought her everything he can, and she pictures it as gold and jewels laid down at her side, the most precious things a person could offer. Still she says the one thing she can’t give back is love. That refrain, don’t ask me for love, is the ache at the center of the song. She isn’t cruel about it. She just can’t return what he feels.
You can see the discomfort between them. He keeps his eyes lowered, unable to look at her, and she sits there sighing, heavy with sorrow, because she knows she is the one causing his pain. Her way out is to offer the next best thing she has: let us join our lives as friends. In Sinhala love songs this is a familiar, bittersweet move, the lover who would rather keep someone close as a friend than lose them completely, even though both of them know friendship is not what he came for.
By the last verse she is pushing him to let go for his own sake. Go find someone else and smile again, she tells him, erase me from your heart. The line about wiping away the stories of the past is her asking them both to clear away whatever history they shared so it stops hurting, so they can smile instead of grieve. It is the kindest version of goodbye she knows how to give.
What stays with you is how the song keeps reaching for a song itself, asking how any tune could carry feelings this tangled. She loves him as a friend and wishes him well, but she can’t pretend the love he wants is there. That gap, between the gold he offers and the love she can’t give, is the quiet heartbreak the whole thing is built on.
