The moonlit terrace kisses the moon maiden….

It is late, the stars have gone into hiding, and a man is lying beside the woman he loves. That is the whole world of this song, one night, one room, and a longing he makes no attempt to hide.

The first verse builds that night out of weather. Rain falls from heavy clouds onto a silk bed, and his feelings run over their banks like a river in flood. Between those two pictures he slips in something a Sinhala listener catches at once, the hour when Mara’s armies come calling at the heart. In Buddhist tradition Mara sent his armies to tempt the Buddha on the night before his awakening, so borrowing that line for desire arriving at midnight is half confession and half joke. He knows what has taken hold of him.

The chorus turns on two words that both carry the moon in them. Sandaganaa is a moon maiden, built the way suranganaa (a celestial maiden) is built, so calling her that lifts her above an ordinary woman. Sandaluthala is the moonlit upper terrace of a house. Letting the terrace kiss her is how he describes his own kiss without naming it, and the rest of the chorus keeps the same gentle code going: warmth, a hilltop, honey carried up to it again tonight.

In the last verse the song softens. He has not been down to the river in a long while, and rather than simply going, he asks. His heart wants permission before it kisses the shore. Then comes the line that lifts the whole song out of a single night: through this life that is spending itself and through every birth in saṃsāra, be my wife, always. Sinhala love songs reach for that promise often, and here it arrives as tenderness rather than ceremony. The wanting and the vow are one feeling, said in a single breath.
