Mama sihina sihina windemiSaptha Swarayai Lyrics English Translation
On the still hilltop, dew settles drop by drop
Falling on the flowers, little beads of dew
Far off, the lotus blooms spread their scent
and bees come humming all around
When her soft smile trembles open like flower petals
feeling after feeling stirs in me
Tender and gentle, I am there in the midst of her beauty
I felt it, soft as a dream
It is the seven notes, ee eee eee, a fragrance drifting
It is the seven notes, ee eee eee, a fragrance drifting
Pearls scattered across my mind, a heart of beauty falling like dew
dreams strewn about, colours fading, settling before my eyes
When her soft smile trembles open like flower petals
feeling after feeling stirs in me
Tender and gentle, I am there in the midst of her beauty
I felt it, soft as a dream
In this place I drank in the sweet music upon her face
in the rhythm that plays
In the blue sky, dew-soft blossoms of rain come falling
and I, in love
When her swaying hips and the anklets on her feet sway and chime
feeling after feeling stirs in me
Soft and smooth and sweet, in the midst of her beauty
I felt it, soft as a dream

Saptha Swarayai Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is so taken with a girl that just being near her feels like stepping into a dream. The song never really leaves that dream. From the first line he is on a quiet hilltop at dawn, watching dew settle on flowers, and that calm, fragrant morning is really a picture of how she makes him feel inside. Everything around him, the dew, the distant lotus, the bees drawn to its scent, is soft and unhurried, the way new love can slow the whole world down.
The title gives the song its heart. Saptha swara are the seven notes of the musical scale, the building blocks of all melody, and he keeps saying her presence “is the seven notes.” He is telling us she is music itself to him. Her smile opens like flower petals trembling in a breeze, her beauty surrounds him, and a sweet “fragrance” keeps drifting through the song. In Sinhala love poetry that fragrance, the suwanda, is less about an actual smell and more about a feeling that lingers and pulls you in, the way the bees can’t help circling the scented lotus. He is one of those bees.
The middle of the song moves inward. Pearls scatter across his mind, dreams lie strewn about, colours soften and fade and finally come to rest in front of his eyes. He is describing that pleasant daze of being lost in someone, where thoughts won’t hold still and the world goes gentle and blurred. By the last verse the dream turns to sound and movement: he drinks in the music on her face, soft rain falls from a blue sky like blossoms, and her anklets chime as she sways. The salamba, the small anklet bells a dancer or a graceful girl wears, ring with every step, and that little sound is what tips him fully into love.
Nothing dramatic happens here, and that is the point. It is a song about the spell of looking at someone you adore and feeling music, scent and dream all blur into one. He keeps returning to the same line, “I felt it, soft as a dream,” because that is honestly all he wants to do, stay inside this moment a little longer.
