As Queen Maya lay in peaceful sleep,
resting upon her bed of flowers,
a baby elephant, white upon white,
bearing a lotus flower in its trunk,
circled her three times, keeping her to its right,
and entered her womb from the right side
This is the dream I saw, she said,
telling the king the next day //
the king summoned the brahmins
and asked the meaning of the dream she had seen
As Queen Maya lay in peaceful sleep,
resting upon her bed of flowers,
a baby elephant, white upon white,
bearing a lotus flower in its trunk,
circled her three times, keeping her to its right,
and entered her womb from the right side
The virtue of a jewel of a blessed son shows here,
it means great fortune, o king //
conceived was Siddhartha, the Bodhisatta, the Great Being,
in Maya’s womb
conceived was Siddhartha, the Bodhisatta..////

Sapa Ninde Song Meaning and Interpretation
This song, another chapter of Sanuka’s Windy album on the Buddha’s life, retells Queen Maya’s famous dream, the sign of the Bodhisatta’s conception. As she lies in peaceful sleep on a bed of flowers, a pure white baby elephant, carrying a lotus in its trunk, circles her three times keeping her on its right, the auspicious, respectful direction, and enters her womb from the right side. It is one of the best-loved images in Buddhist tradition, related here simply and reverently.
The middle moves to the court. The next day the queen tells the king the dream she saw, and he summons the brahmins, the learned interpreters, to ask what it means. The song lets the wonder rest in that ordinary human moment: a mother describing a strange, radiant dream, a household trying to understand it.
The brahmins give their reading: this is the sign of a jewel of a blessed son, a mark of great fortune for the king. And the song names the meaning plainly, that Siddhartha, the Bodhisatta, the Great Being, has been conceived in Maya’s womb. Sung by Sanuka to words by Daya Wickramasinghe, it is a gentle, devotional retelling of the moment the future Buddha’s life began, sung to be received as sacred story rather than personal emotion.
