Amme paaluyi amme
Amme enawada amme

Amme Enawado Lyrics English Translation
The wind blowing feels so strange
The dark is heavier than other nights
If I get scared here all alone
I’ll keep my heart brave
as long as mother is coming
To hide from the pitch-black dark
I’ll stay in the light of the stars
But if the dark grows deeper
will mother come?
Mother, will you come?
To get through a night all alone
Even though I’m not used to it, I’ll manage
But if the loneliness grows too much
will mother come?
Mother, will you come?
Mother, it’s so lonely, mother
Mother, it’s so dark, mother
Mother, it’s so lonely, mother
Mother, will you come, mother

Amme Enawado Song Meaning and Interpretation
A child is alone in the dark, and the whole song is that child calling out for their mother. Tonight the wind outside sounds stranger than it ever has, and the night feels blacker than other nights. The small voice keeps trying to talk itself into being brave, but you can hear what it wants, which is for mother to walk through the door.
You can hear the child making little deals with the fear. If I get scared here on my own, I’ll hold my heart steady, as long as mother is coming. To hide from the pitch dark, I’ll sit in the light of the stars. Each verse the child finds one more way to cope, and each verse ends on the same question that undoes all of it: amme enawado, mother, will you come? The courage lasts only until the dark gets a little deeper or the loneliness gets a little heavier, and then the question comes back.
The images stay simple, and that is the point. The darkness here is more than night. It stands for everything a small child is afraid of when nobody is beside them. The starlight the child holds onto is that thin bit of hope you cling to while you wait for someone, small and far away, but enough to sit next to in the dark. By the last verse the child gives up on being brave and just says it over and over: it’s lonely, mother, it’s dark, mother, will you come.
Anyone who waited up for a parent as a child, or has watched their own child wait, will feel this one. It carries that exact ache of missing your mother in the dark and still believing that if you call for her enough times, she will come.
