Me Kamani Lyrics
Me kamani me kamani umba hinda wechcha abaddee
Ekak dekak nova puskola pothak liwa heki
Ayya malo meravarayo delgoda chandi
Umbata pem kale mage sudu kodiya peni peni
Eppawala town medde iskoleya eri
Umba enakan mama hitiya awwe kara wewi
Bodiya pumbagena awa thawa thawa kalli
Umbawa magen uduraganna dammane gori...
Me kamani me kamani umba hinda wechcha abaddee
Ekak dekak nova puskola pothak liwa heki
Ayya malo meravarayo delgoda chandi
Umbata pem kale mage sudu kodiya peni peni...
Mata koyinda ellenna mas thattu thattu
Shareera koodu penna kotu kawakatu
Gampahama lassana sudu namala nelapu
Hinda tamai ma ekkala kollo oroppu
Kiwama nahana eka yaka kiya kiya
Appa kudamma banna diga harahata
Umbath giya mava dama papuwa hirakara
Lihaganna ba mata umba mata damma thonduwa...
Me kamani...
Me Kamani Lyrics English Translation
Kamani, oh Kamani, the mess I got into because of you,
not one or two pages, you could fill a whole ola-leaf book.
The big brothers, the toughs, the strongmen, the bullies of Delgoda,
they all fell for you, my white flag, eyeing you up and down.
In the middle of Eppawala town, when school let out,
I stood waiting for you, my neck baking in the sun.
The other gangs came puffing out their chests, more and more of them,
those Gori thugs, all out to snatch you away from me.
Kamani, oh Kamani, the mess I got into because of you,
not one or two pages, you could fill a whole ola-leaf book.
The big brothers, the toughs, the strongmen, the bullies of Delgoda,
they all fell for you, my white flag, eyeing you up and down.
Where would I get hanging slabs of muscle on me,
this body of mine just shows off sticks and bones.
Because I plucked the prettiest fair na flower in all of Gampaha,
the boys around me burned green with envy.
Calling me a no-good, they kept jeering “devil, devil,”
and my father and stepmother cursed me up and down.
You went off too and left me, my chest all tied up in knots,
this noose you tied on me, I just can’t undo.
Kamani…

Me Kamani Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a playful, swaggering love song, the kind a small-town boy sings with a grin even while he is licking his wounds. The voice is a scrappy young man, no muscle on him, more sticks and bones than tough guy, who has fallen hard for a girl named Kamani from his town. He is not pouring out a tender heartache so much as bragging, complaining, and laughing at his own bad luck all at once.
His whole problem is that Kamani is too pretty for his own good. He calls her his “sudu kodiya,” his white flag, a fond local nickname for a fair, lovely girl, and the trouble she brought him could fill a “puskola pothak,” an old ola-leaf manuscript, the long palm-leaf books Sri Lankans once wrote on. In other words, the stories of the grief loving her caused would run for volumes. Every tough in the area, the “ayya malo,” the strongmen, the famous “Delgoda chandi” (the bully every village has its own version of), all had their eyes on her too. So this skinny boy finds himself standing outside the school in Eppawala town, neck burning in the sun, waiting for her while rival gangs strut up with their chests puffed out, ready to grab her from him.
The second verse is where he gets honest and funny about himself. He has no slabs of muscle to throw around, his body is all “kotu kawakatu,” sticks and pincers, scrawny as can be. But he did the one thing that mattered: he plucked the most beautiful “sudu namal,” the fair na flower (the fragrant bloom of the ironwood tree, a classic Sinhala image for a pure, lovely girl), the prettiest in all of Gampaha. That win is exactly why everyone turned on him. The other boys went green with jealousy and jeered at him, calling him a good-for-nothing and a “yaka,” a devil. Even his father and stepmother scolded him over it.
And then, after all that, she leaves anyway. That is the sting under the comedy. He is left with his chest tied up in knots, a “thonduwa,” a noose she tied around him that he cannot loosen no matter how he tries. The fun of the song is in how he carries it, half boasting that he beat all the tough guys to win her, half admitting he lost her in the end and his heart is still snared. It is the universal feeling of being the underdog who got the girl and then could not keep her, sung with the cheek and self-mockery of a village boy who would rather make you laugh than see him cry.
