Mal Pipei Deneth Arei Lyrics

Mal pipei , deneth arei, katha kiyai hemin
Hiru ebei, eliya dei, kurulu gee asei
Ridi kaale, aran ude, koheda yanne me..
Kohe sitanda, enne kauda, maw piyan obe

Dowanna kiri kaleth aran, yanne wigasini
Goviyekui piya magei, inne me game

Badinne koma goviduwakk kumarayek ne man
Piyarajuth mawath kese wei manapayak....

Badinna onayai kiya, kauda ahuwe den
Hidinna na welawakuth, menna yanawa man

Mal Pipei Deneth Arei Lyrics English Translation

Flowers bloom, eyes open, and soft words are spoken
The sun climbs and gives its light, and you can hear the birds singing
With a silver pot, early in the morning, where are you off to?
Where are you from, and who are your parents?

I’ve taken the milk pot to wash it, and I’m in a hurry
My father is a farmer, I live here in this village

How could I marry a farm girl, when I’m a prince?
How would my father the king, and my mother, ever approve?

And who asked you to marry me anyway?
I haven’t got time to stand here, look, I’m off now

Mal Pipei Deneth Arei Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a light, playful country song built as a little back-and-forth between two young people who meet on a village path one morning. The setting is drawn first: flowers opening, the sun coming up, birds singing. It is the picture of a fresh Sri Lankan village morning, and into it walks a girl carrying a silver milk pot down to wash it, the way farm households once did at first light. A young man, who turns out to be a prince, stops her and starts asking questions: where is she going, where is she from, whose daughter is she.

The girl answers plainly, with no fuss. She is busy, she has the pot to wash, and she tells him straight that her father is just a farmer and this little village is where she belongs. There is no shyness or stars in her eyes, only an honest, working girl going about her morning.

Then the prince says the thing that gives the song its sting. He cannot marry a farmer’s daughter, he says, because he is royalty, and his father the king and his mother would never agree to such a match. It is the old gap between palace and paddy field, the idea that birth decides who is allowed to love whom. He expects her, perhaps, to be hurt or to plead.

What makes the song delightful is how she throws it right back. Who ever asked him to marry her? She has no time to stand around listening to a prince feel sorry for himself, and off she goes. The whole charm is in that reversal. The grand prince is the one left standing on the path, while the village girl, sure of her own worth, simply walks on. Under the teasing tone there is a quiet pride in ordinary village life, the suggestion that a farmer’s daughter owes no one an apology and needs no palace to feel complete.
