Wadimal Obe Hithata Lyrics English Translation

You who are older than me, I drew close to your heart
I loved you more than my own life
Taking no notice of that, today you
played games with my heart
(Wishing that you keep well wherever you have gone,
I send you my blessings……//)

You said the age gap between us was never something the two of us needed
You laid your hand on my head and swore a thousand oaths
You put the blame on me, you trampled my love underfoot
And even though you walked away, I hold no anger against you
(Wishing that you keep well wherever you have gone,
I send you my blessings…….//)

Even after days and months have passed, somewhere along the road
let me see you and make this sorrow lighter, every single day
My darling, I am begging you
in the life that comes next, do not become anyone else’s
I want your hands, even though this time you belong to another
(Wishing that you keep well wherever you have gone,
I send you my blessings…….//)

You who are older than me……..

Wadimal Obe Hithata Song Meaning and Interpretation

A young man is talking to a woman older than him, the one he loved and lost. He never uses her name. He calls her wedimal, the elder one, and that single word carries the whole situation: she was ahead of him in years, and everyone around them would have noticed it before they noticed anything else. He got close to her heart anyway, and he loved her more than his own life. Then, as he puts it, she played with that heart.

The second verse is where the hurt sits. She was the one who said the age gap did not matter, that it was nobody’s business but theirs. She put her hand on his head and swore, over and over. In Sri Lankan life that gesture is not casual. An elder rests a hand on your head to bless you, and you place your own hand on someone’s head when you are promising something you intend to keep. So a thousand oaths sworn that way were meant to settle the matter forever. What he got instead was the blame for it all, and his love kicked aside like something in the road.

And still he refuses to be bitter. The line that keeps coming back, the one the whole song is built around, is a plain wish that she is well wherever she has ended up. Sinhala has a set phrase for that, suba pathanawa, the same words you would say to someone leaving on a journey or starting a new life. He is not being noble about it. He is doing the only thing left to a person who cannot stop loving someone who has gone.

The last verse loosens what he is holding in. He asks for almost nothing, just to run into her once on the road some day so the ache gets a little thinner. Then he asks for the one thing he has no right to ask for. In the next birth, do not be anyone else’s. That appeal to the coming athmaya is common in Sinhala song, and it is a quiet admission of defeat: this life is already decided, she is married or promised elsewhere, and the only place left where he can still have her is a life neither of them has reached yet.

What stays with you is the gap between what he was promised and what he was left with. A hand on the head, a thousand vows, an age difference that was supposed to mean nothing. All of it ends with him standing on the roadside hoping to catch sight of her, sending her good wishes he knows she will never hear.
