Nimawuden Lyrics
Raathriye nidra noye
Numba ha mawu heenaya ko kohe
Thunyame paaluma yaamaye
Lanwee kiyu gee noasee ase
Meewithe mada ma niwune
Heepoda mada nethu bondaweela
Nawathunu thana nawatheela
Awasan me pem hora
Gewunaaden me sihine
Ape tharu na galapeela
Sansaara katha madiweela
Demagaka ho haraweela
Nimawuden me sihine
Palandoowa thodu ma
Himikaara wee eda
Nosithoowa se kathawe daegilee mindee giya
Sudu sela roo dara
Sitiyaata ko sina
Ape aadare ape nowoowa ra uda wela
Gewu nishaamaye mathake aluth wela
Me dumaaraye kandulal kathakara

At night sleep will not come,
where, oh where, is the dream we built together
in the lonely last watch of the night
the song you sang close to me is heard yet unheard
I dissolved in the mead of it
Eyes blurred in the drizzle,
stopped where they stopped,
this final hour of our love,
as this dream is spent
our stars did not align,
the samsara story fell short,
turning off at some crossroads,
this dream comes to its end
The earrings you once wore,
I became their keeper that day,
unlike anything I imagined, in the story our laced fingers slipped apart
Though you wore the white bridal robes,
where is the smile?
our love became a dawn that was never ours
the memory of that spent night turns new again
and in this mist, the teardrops spoke
Eyes blurred in the drizzle,
stopped where they stopped,
this final hour of our love,
as this dream is spent
our stars did not align,
the samsara story fell short,
turning off at some crossroads,
this dream comes to its end

Nimawuden Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a tender heartbreak song sung in the sleepless dark, mourning a love and a marriage that never came to be. At night sleep will not come, he begins, and he cannot find the dream the two of them once built. In the lonely last watch of the night the song she used to sing close to him plays on in his head, half heard, and he loses himself in the memory as if in wine.
The reasons for the parting are quietly, painfully Sri Lankan. Our stars did not align, he says, tharu galapila, the language of horoscopes that decides so many marriages here, and the samsara story fell short, as if the two of them were simply not fated across lifetimes. At some crossroads the road turned away, and the dream ends. The images sharpen the loss: the earrings he once became keeper of, the laced fingers that slipped apart, the white bridal robes she wore for a wedding that was never theirs to keep.
The ending settles into grief rather than anger. Their love became a dawn that was never theirs, he says, a new day that belonged to someone else’s life. The memory of that spent night keeps renewing itself, and in the mist of it the teardrops do the talking. It is a song about the particular ache of losing not only a person but the whole future you had already imagined with them.
