Mage Pale Andura Nasanna Lyrics
Mage pale andura nasannana
Sithanawa manaliyak genna
Niwasapura eliya karanna
Mata winodayen kaale gewanna//
Upan rate angalak netha magei kiyanne
Mama asaranayeki ataraman wuna
Oya ira handa dekatath bari wiya andura nasanna
Mama tharuwak ada ahase pawena//
Rupa rajiniyo kumariyo mama soyannne nae
Oya idam kadam mama balanne nae
Oya kulamala daewedi kisivak mama soyannne nae
Gunawath lalanawak thawama dakke nae//
Mage pale anda putu netha sapata sitinna
Netha sinindu sela hadata andinna
Oya ran mini muthu maala walalu netha palandinna
Mama duppath bawa nithara sithanna//
Mage Pale Andura Nasanna Lyrics English Translation
To drive the darkness from my little hut,
I’m thinking of bringing home a bride,
to fill the whole house with light,
to live out my days in happiness.
I don’t own an inch of land in the country I was born in,
I’m a helpless man, lost with nowhere to turn.
Even the sun and the moon together couldn’t drive off this darkness,
today I’m a star drifting in the sky.
I’m not searching for beauty queens or princesses,
I’m not looking at fields and plots of land,
I’m not after any of that caste or dowry,
I just haven’t yet found a woman of good heart.
In my hut there’s no bed or chairs to sit in comfort,
no soft silk to dress up nicely,
none of those gold and gem and pearl necklaces and bangles to wear,
I’m forever thinking of how poor I am.

Mage Pale Andura Nasanna Song Meaning and Interpretation
A poor man dreams of marrying. He lives in a small hut, a පැල, the kind of bare thatched home that tells you everything about his means, and his one wish is simple: to bring home a bride who will fill the place with light and let him live out his days happy. That is where the song opens, not with romance or a particular girl, but with a longing for a companion to chase the loneliness out of his home. The “darkness” he keeps mentioning is not just the unlit hut, it stands for the empty, joyless life of a man living alone with nothing.
His situation is hard, and he doesn’t hide it. He says he doesn’t own a single inch of land in the country he was born in, that he is helpless and lost with nowhere to belong. Then comes the song’s most touching image: even the sun and the moon together, the two great lights of the sky, couldn’t lift the darkness from his life, and so he calls himself a lone star drifting up in the sky. A drifting star is a beautiful way of saying he has no roots, no place, no one, just floating with no ground beneath him.
The heart of the song is what he is and isn’t looking for. He turns away from everything most people chase in a match. He’s not after beauty queens or princesses, not eyeing anyone’s fields or property, not interested in caste or dowry, the wedding gold, the gems, the pearl necklaces and bangles a bride’s family might bring. In old Sri Lankan marriage custom these things mattered enormously, a man’s worth was often weighed in land and dowry. He rejects all of it. All he wants is a ගුණවත් ලලනාවක්, a woman of good character, a kind and decent heart, and he admits he hasn’t found her yet.
He is honest about what he can offer, and that honesty is what makes the song ache. His hut has no bed or chairs to sit in comfort, no fine silk to dress well in, none of the gold and pearls a bride might wear. He keeps turning over his own poverty in his mind. What he’s really saying is a quiet, dignified plea: I have nothing to give but a true heart, and I’m only looking for the same in return. It’s a poor man’s prayer for love that asks nothing of wealth, and it leaves you hoping that somewhere, his good woman is looking for him too.
