Hinawenna Beri Tharamata Lyrics
Hina wenna bari tharamata
Handa ganna bari tharamata//
Numbe namin mage hithe thanu maliga
Thanu maliga
Katha kiyana tharu dasata...
Liyadenna madi ahasama//
Numbe namin mage hade mawenna geethika
Mawenna geethika...
Dethola nam golui, muwa kamala mal samai
Hitata nethata, suwada gena thiya
Numba rahasin awith mage lowama heenayak kala
Ahasa nam durai, sanda nena vaga sebai
Sandata rayata tharu walata hora...
Numba nokiya gihilla. Mage paalu denetha boda kala..
Hina wenna bari tharamata
Handa ganna bari tharamata
Katha kiyana tharu dasata
Liyadenna madi ahasama
Numbe namin mage hithe thanu maliga
Mawenna geethika...
Hinawenna Beri Tharamata Lyrics English Translation
Too much to be able to smile,
too much to be able to cry,
the palaces I built in my heart in your name,
the palaces I built,
for those star eyes of yours that tell their own stories,
even the whole sky isn’t enough to sign over to you,
the songs that take shape in my heart in your name,
the songs that take shape…
Your lips stay silent, your face is soft like a lotus in bloom,
you placed a fragrance over my heart and my eyes,
you came in secret and turned my whole world into a dream.
The sky is far away, and it’s true the moon will never come down,
yet hiding from the moon, from the night, from the stars,
you left without a word, and blurred these lonely eyes of mine.
Too much to be able to smile,
too much to be able to cry,
for those star eyes that tell their own stories,
even the whole sky isn’t enough to sign over,
the palaces I built in my heart in your name,
the songs that take shape…

Hinawenna Beri Tharamata Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a duet, a young man and a young woman trading lines about a love that filled their lives and then quietly slipped away. The very first words set the mood: the hurt sits in a place too deep to laugh off and too heavy to cry out. That is the whole song in one breath, a longing that has nowhere to go.
The lover is everywhere in this heart even though they are gone. In your name I built palaces, the voice says, palaces meaning all the dreams and the future imagined around this person. The beloved’s eyes are “star eyes that tell stories,” eyes so expressive they say things the mouth never does, and to write those eyes a love letter the singer wants to sign over the whole sky, and finds even the sky too small a gift. It is the kind of sweet exaggeration Sinhala love poetry loves, a way of saying no offering in the world would be enough.
Then the imagery turns tender and a little sad. The beloved’s lips stay silent while the face is “like a lotus in bloom,” the lotus being the standard image in Sinhala for a calm, pure, lovely face. That quiet beauty leaves a “fragrance” on the heart and eyes, a presence that lingers the way a scent does after the flower is gone. You came in secret and made my whole world a dream, the line says, and you can hear both the wonder of it and the warning, because dreams end.
The last verse names the ache plainly. The sky is far and the moon will never really come down to us, an old way of saying some things are simply out of reach. And like the moon, the lover slipped away “hiding from the moon, the night and the stars,” leaving without a single word and blurring these lonely eyes with tears. What stays with you at the end is that gentle, helpless grief, the love still standing in the heart like those built palaces, with no one left to live in them.
