Sepalika Malai Lyrics
Sepalika malai, sudu paata meedumai
Hari lassanai sudui
Atthatama oba wagei //
Mandaramen eha, dew duwak athi bala
Mata yanna denna siyumeliye
Suwanda soya soya
Me raththriyama nisansalai
Eth oba nisa
Mal pipena thuru latha
Manda sulange nelawuna
Sitha dakina dakina sihinedi oba
Mata mathak wuna
Asi piya helanna mohothakwath
Mathaka nathi wunaSepalika Malai Lyrics English Translation
Sepalika flowers, and a white, pale mist
So lovely, so white
Truly, just like you
Beyond the mist, there is the glow of a goddess
Let me come to you, my gentle one
Searching, searching for your fragrance
This night is so still and quiet
And it is all because of you
Until the flowers bloom, the vine
swayed in the gentle breeze
In every dream my heart keeps seeing, there you are
I remembered you
and forgot
to even close my eyes for a moment

Sepalika Malai Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man lies awake at night, and every soft and beautiful thing around him turns into the girl he loves. He looks at the sepalika flowers and the pale white mist settling over everything, and instead of seeing flowers and mist he sees her. That is where the song begins, with a heart so full of one person that the whole night starts to look like her.
The images he reaches for are all gentle ones, and that matters. The sepalika (night jasmine) is a small white flower that opens after dark and fills the air with scent, then drops by morning. Comparing her to it says she is delicate, pure, and quietly fragrant, the kind of beauty you notice in the dark and in the quiet. The white mist carries the same feeling, soft, cool, and calming rather than dazzling. When he says she is like a goddess glowing beyond the mist and calls her his gentle one, he is putting her just out of reach, something he longs to walk toward.
Then he tells us what is really happening. The night is perfectly still and peaceful, and yet he cannot rest, and he knows exactly why. It is because of her. He pictures a flowering vine swaying in the breeze, growing toward the moment its flowers open, and that slow, waiting movement is his own heart, leaning toward her, waiting. In every dream his mind drifts to, she is there.
The last lines hold the ache of the whole song. He was so busy remembering her that he forgot to even close his eyes for a single moment. That is the sweet, helpless sleeplessness of someone in love, when missing a person fills the night so completely that rest never gets a chance to arrive.
