It is late, the mist has come down, and the sepalika tree is in bloom. That is the whole setting of this song, and the young man standing in it can think about only one person. White flowers, white mist, and then he says the thing he has been turning over all evening: it all looks exactly like her.

The choice of flower carries most of the weight. Sepalika, the night-flowering jasmine, opens only after dark, throws out a strong sweet scent through the night, and drops its small white blooms by morning, which is why Sri Lankan households gather them at dawn for the temple. So the comparison does more work than “she is pretty”. It says she is white and fine and fragrant in a way that belongs to the night, and that something this lovely does not last past sunrise.

The second verse turns playful. Beyond the haze, he says, there must be a celestial maiden, so let me go, my delicate one, let me follow that scent and find her. There is a tease in it, because the girl he is asking permission from is the one he has just compared to those white flowers. Then his voice settles again. The night is completely still, and even the stillness belongs to her.

By the last verse he has given up on sleeping. The vines that flowered through the evening are being rocked in the soft breeze, and in every dream his mind keeps circling back to, she is the one who shows up. The closing two lines are the quiet punchline: he forgot to close his eyes, even for a moment.
