As a drop of water falls from the blue sky down to the earth,

This is a short, gentle hymn built on a single, quiet image drawn from nature, two drops of rain becoming one. It watches “a drop of water” fall “from the blue sky down to the earth,” and then notices something the eye almost never catches, that on the way down “it met another drop, also sent down.” Two separate drops, each on its own journey from heaven to earth, find one another in mid-air.

What happens next is the whole meaning of the song. “Wrapped up in love, these two drops of water fell together, and becoming one single drop,” they join completely. Two become one, not side by side but truly merged, so that they can no longer be told apart. And that union has a purpose beyond itself: the new, single drop is “given as a gift to the earth,” falling to bless the ground below.
