When I was small they put me in school
I grew up there, learning, filling my mind
In my class at school, a girl fell into my net
when she heard these songs I sang
She would come out to the main road to see me,
standing there with her bundle of books
At the spot where we met we would talk,
and the two of us would walk to school
This is how the two of us went to school
She loves me like her own life
I went to her home to see her,
but fate was not on our side

When my mother found out about this, she scolded me
and put me in another school instead
I shed tears
and sat there in pain, thinking of her

A letter arrived and I read it through

I went into the Madam forest in the dark
to look for my dear princess
When I saw the people there my mind went into a panic
my princess had died, hanging from a branch
I picked up the letter and read it again,
and there it was written that she was dying

This is a man looking back on his school days and the first girl he ever loved, telling the whole story from the sweetness of how it began to the terrible way it ended. He starts gently, with the kind of memory anyone carries from childhood, and you have no idea yet how dark it is going to turn.

It begins like a small, ordinary romance. He sings, a girl in his class falls for his voice, and soon she is waiting by the main road with her books so they can walk to school together. When he says she “fell into my net,” it is the playful Sinhala way of saying she was charmed by him, caught up in him, not anything sinister. He compares her love to a rose, the rose standing for something fresh and beautiful and tender, and he says she loves him “like her own life,” a phrase that lands heavier once you know how the story ends. But fate, as he puts it, was not on their side. His mother finds out, scolds him, and moves him to a different school to break them apart, and he is left crying and thinking of her.

Then the song turns. A friend brings word that the girl is crying without him, and a letter reaches him in which she writes that she cannot live without him and is going to take her own life, begging him to come and comfort her before she goes. He rushes into the Madam forest in the dark to find her, and the crowd of people he sees there tells him everything before he even reaches her. His princess is already dead, hanging from a branch. He reads her letter again and only then fully understands what she had warned him of.

What makes this one ache is the gap between the soft opening and the brutal end. The same line that opens the song, “I think of my school days every single day, her love looked to me like a rose,” returns at the very end, but now it is unbearable, because the rose and the school days are tied forever to a girl who killed herself for him. He is left alone in a world gone dark, carrying a memory that is both the sweetest and the most painful thing he owns. It is a story-song about young love, a controlling family, and a loss he can never undo.
