Mage Nethata Obe Netha Lyrics
Mage nethata obe netha gatunu wele, maa wataa pawuru binda watunaa
E karunaa bara neth kaanthiyen, bandee adam ekin eka lihunaa
Nidahase rasaya mata kiyaadunnu, aadaraya pahasa penwalaa unnu
Oba nisaa jeewithaya labunaa, jeewithe yasayi yali danunaa.
Sitha hadaa thawee siti atheethaye mathakayan nisolman welaa thiyey
Oba aadaren wasee.
E sanaadare neth kalum wakee, hada dawaa ridum denu danunaa
Oba dayaa nethin maa dihaa balaa mata kamaa karana bawa danunaa
Natha ithin yalith iki bindum ane, wedanaa susum paradilaa wage
Oba nisaa jeewithaya labunaa, jeewithe yasayi yali danunaa.
Mage Nethata Obe Netha Lyrics English Translation
In the moment your eye met my eye, the walls around me broke and fell
by that mercy-laden light of your eyes, the chains of Adam were loosened, one by one
you taught me the taste of freedom, you showed me the touch of love
because of you I received life, I felt again that life is good
The memories of the past, where my heart wept and grieved,
now lie stilled and quiet, covered over by your love
That beloved light of your eyes soaked into me, I felt my heart burn with pain,
and when you looked at me with merciful eyes, I knew that you forgive me
There is no more sobbing now, oh, the sighs of pain seem defeated
because of you I received life, I felt again that life is good

Mage Nethata Obe Netha Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a hymn about the moment of being seen by God, and how a single loving glance can set a soul free. It opens with that instant of encounter: “in the moment your eye met my eye, the walls around me broke and fell.” Whatever had shut the singer in, guilt, fear, isolation, collapses the instant Christ looks at him. And the freeing goes deep, all the way back to the beginning: “by that mercy-laden light of your eyes, the chains of Adam were loosened, one by one.” The bondage of original sin, the inheritance of Adam, is untied link by link simply by the mercy in Jesus’ gaze.
What that gaze gives him is life itself, felt as freedom and love. “You taught me the taste of freedom, you showed me the touch of love,” and the refrain sums it up, “because of you I received life, I felt again that life is good.” A person who had forgotten how to enjoy living is given it back.
The second half is about the healing of the past. “The memories of the past, where my heart wept and grieved, now lie stilled and quiet, covered over by your love.” Old wounds are not erased but hushed, wrapped in love. And at the centre is the assurance of forgiveness, read in the eyes: “when you looked at me with merciful eyes, I knew that you forgive me.” That knowledge ends the weeping, “there is no more sobbing now, the sighs of pain seem defeated.” What the listener is left with is the quiet miracle of grace exchanged in a look, a soul that meets the merciful eyes of Jesus, feels its chains fall away and its past grow calm, and discovers, forgiven and free, that life is good again.
