Nethu Seluna Lyrics

Am - F G Am (repeat)

Nethu salunaa kandulin desa piri
Oba sitiya kauluva langatama vi
Maga thotadi nodutuwa wilasa adi
Tharaha wela mata pem bandhi kumari

Gimhane apa hamu vi
Santhane thawa thawuni
Pera maga ma adha newathi
Yali eya sihi karami //

Muweththiyak guru geta awa
Hanthanath inngi bingi pewa
Mal parak mata atha wanuwa
Sundara wu sandhe gewuna
Dhuka sanka niwuni
Apa dhathama bandhuni
Ma adharea obatamai

Wassane maha wesi wetuna
Desum hande paluwa dhanuna
Mithuru thepul as rathu keruwa
Sandha nathiwama dhina sathi gewuna
May mal pipena thuraa
Mahaweli galana thuraa
Maa neth piyena thura

Nethu Seluna Lyrics English Translation

Your eyes trembled, your face filled with tears
You came right up to the window where I was sitting
As though you’d never seen me on the road, at the ferry crossing
Pretending to be angry, you bound me to your love, my girl

We met in the summer
And in our hearts it grew and grew
The road I once walked, today I stop on it
And I remember her all over again

A young woman came to the lecture halls
Trading little signs and smiles up on Hanthana
She waved a spray of flowers at me
And a beautiful evening slipped away
The weight of sorrow eased
The two of us were bound together
I love you, only you

In the rainy season the heavy rains came down
The murmured words turned to loneliness
Friendly talk reddened our eyes
With no moon, the days and weeks went by
Until the May flowers bloom
Until the Mahaweli stops flowing
Until my eyes close for good

Nethu Seluna Song Meaning and Interpretation

A young man is standing on a road he used to walk every day, and the moment he stops there the whole thing comes back to him. This is a campus love story, the kind that begins at Peradeniya, up on the Hanthana hills, in the years when you are young and everything feels enormous. He remembers a girl who came up to the window where he sat, her eyes brimming, pretending she was cross with him while really she was falling for him. That little act of fake anger is how a lot of Sri Lankan love starts, the teasing that hides the real feeling, and he saw straight through it.

From there he walks back through how it grew. They met in the warm months and the feeling kept building. He pictures her arriving at the lecture halls, the two of them passing small signals and shy smiles across the slopes of Hanthana, her waving a handful of flowers at him as a whole golden evening melted away. For a while the sadness he carried lifted, and they felt joined, and the song lets him say it plainly, I love you, only you.

Then the weather turns, and in Sinhala song the rain almost always does this work. The heavy rains of the wet season come down, and with them the warmth between them cools into something lonely. Words that were once tender start to sting, until talking with each other leaves their eyes red. The line about the days going by “with no moon” is the quiet heartbreak of it, the moon here is the light and gladness a beloved brings, so to live without a moon is to live with the brightness gone out of things.

What lifts the ending is what he swears at the close. He names the Hanthana hills, the May blossoms, and above all the Mahaweli, the great river that runs through that whole landscape and through the country itself. He promises to love her until the May flowers stop blooming, until the Mahaweli stops flowing, until his own eyes close for the last time. A river like that does not stop and the flowers come back every year, so he is really saying his love will last as long as he draws breath. It is a young man’s vow, made against the hills where it all began, and that is what the listener is left holding.
