Nihal Nelson (නිහාල් නෙල්සන්) was a Sri Lankan singer widely regarded as a king of baila, the upbeat dance-song tradition of the island’s coastal towns. Born in Moratuwa on 9 January 1946 and active from 1963 until his death on 13 December 2022, he became one of the most prolific recording artists the country has produced, with a catalogue that mixed baila with pop, soul, and rhythm and blues.
Nihal Nelson began performing for Radio Ceylon (later the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) in 1963. His first hit, Lassanata Pipunu Wanamal, arrived early and established him as a fresh voice on the airwaves. Over the following decades he worked with figures such as composer R. A. Chandrasena and songwriter Sarath Munasinghe, and he became a fixture of the live concert stage, where his rapport with audiences kept him in steady demand for nearly sixty years.
Nelson is credited with the most albums by any Sri Lankan artist, a total that crossed 110 releases and is often cited at 113. He was the first local singer to issue more than a hundred cassettes, a milestone he marked with the 2000 album Nihal 110 Dot Com. Much of his later work leaned into humour and party energy, the comic-novelty baila that made his shows a staple of weddings and celebrations.
His best-known material ranges from romantic numbers to playful, fast-paced baila built for dancing. The catalogue includes cricket-themed crowd favourites and tongue-in-cheek character songs that show the wit at the heart of his appeal. His delivery, clear, rhythmic, and unhurried, let the lyrics land even at speed, which is part of why the songs remain singalong staples among Sri Lankan listeners at home and across the diaspora.
Nelson was honoured during his lifetime, including the Moratupura Ratnavibhushana title in 2015, and in 2021 a lane in his native Moratuwa was renamed Nihal Nelson Mawatha in his honour. His death in December 2022 prompted tributes across Sri Lankan media, which remembered him as an artist who stayed undefeated on the concert stage. For listeners who grew up with baila, his songs in Sinhala script and the meaning behind them are part of the soundtrack of Sri Lankan celebration.
