This is a very short hymn, and its power is in its smallness, in how much it says with so few words. The whole song is a single, tender picture: “amid the lonely, silent mountain ranges, a little baby wept.” It sets the scene in a vast, quiet, empty landscape, and places at the centre of it the most fragile thing imaginable, a crying infant.

Then it tells us why the baby weeps, and the reason turns the whole image into the gospel in miniature: “for your sake, for my sake, a little baby wept.” This is the Christmas story stripped to its heart. God did not come to save the world in power or splendour but as a helpless newborn, and even his infant tears were, in a sense, shed for the people he came to rescue.

The closing line names the child directly: “that is you, Jesus, that is you.” The recognition lands with quiet wonder, that the crying baby in the cold and lonely place is God himself, come near out of love. In just three lines the hymn holds together the vulnerability of the incarnation and its purpose. What the listener is left with is a hushed, almost breathless tenderness, the astonishing thought that the Lord of the universe entered the world as a weeping child, and did so for you and for me.
