Mata Daranna Ba Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a hymn of a heart overwhelmed, so moved by the love of God that it can barely speak. The opening lines are almost too full for words: “I cannot bear it, Jesus, this love of yours; tears are streaming from my eyes; I cannot say it in words; my heart breaks into sobs.” There is no argument here, only a person undone by being loved more than they can hold. Even the attempt to praise fails, “I have no words to sing your goodness,” until it collapses into the simplest confession of all, “I love you, I love you.”
The second half of the hymn explains where all that emotion comes from, by telling the story of a long disappointment. “Seeking relief, I flew all about the world; I was deceived, and always I was left alone.” The singer looked everywhere for comfort and found only heartbreak, “my heart was torn, crushed by pain,” and even hid himself in sin.
