This is a hymn of repentance, the prayer of a sinner kneeling “at the foot of the cross.” Its posture is humble from the first line, “I fall down weeping,” and its plea is honest, “accept me, a sinner, Lord.” The believer names his fault plainly, “the wrong of turning against you and against your love,” and asks on both knees to be set free. There is no self-justification here, only confession.

The tenderness of the song is in what it asks God to restore. “Do not take from me the name of your child,” it pleads, afraid that sin might cost the singer his place in God’s family, and then asks for comfort, “wiping my tears, give me a smile to my lonely heart.” The deepest longing is for a fresh start: “fill today with the sweetness of a new life, erasing the sins of the past with love.”
