This is a tender hymn of devotion and dedication, sung by a believer who wants to give everything to Jesus. Its recurring promise is beautifully humble: “with tears I will make my offering, I will stay close, ever close.” The tears here are not sorrow but worship, the offering of a heart moved to weeping, and the deepest wish is simply nearness, to stay close to Jesus and, “freed from evil,” to “remain set apart” for him.

The refrain says it plainly and without ornament: “Jesus, you are my life, I love you, my Jesus.” The song does not argue or explain; it simply confesses love. When the singer’s “two eyes fill with tears,” it is God’s “holy power” that “awakens the heart,” so that even the weeping becomes a sign of the Spirit at work within.

The loveliest verse borrows one of Jesus’ own images, from the Gospel of John: “You are the vine, and you are the garden too.” Jesus called himself the true vine and his followers the branches that bear fruit only by staying joined to him. So the singer’s vow follows naturally, “I will give good fruit, with my whole life.” What the listener is left with is a picture of quiet, fruitful devotion, a life that stays attached to its source, offers itself in tears, and asks for nothing more than to remain close to the one it loves.
