The middle lines paint the situation without detail but with real weight, “drowned in tears, disaster all around me, ruin on every side.” The singer feels surrounded, overwhelmed, sinking. And out of that comes the one thing he asks for, the only thing that matters when everything else is collapsing: “do not go and leave my life behind.” His deepest fear is not the disaster itself but the thought of facing it alone, without God.
