This is a hymn of total consecration, offering every part of the self, one by one, to Jesus. Its method is simple and beautiful: it takes the body, faculty by faculty, and hands each over to God. “Let my eyes see Jesus, let my words give praise to Jesus, let my head bow low to Jesus, let my two feet walk toward Jesus.” Sight, speech, mind and step, each is dedicated so that the whole person is pointed in one direction, and the refrain names the longing behind it all, “Jesus, draw near.”

As the verses go on, the offering deepens from the outward to the inward and outward again. The hand is given, “let my hand write about Jesus,” turning even the work of one’s hands into service. Then, at the centre, the most important surrender of all, “let Jesus reign within my heart.” The eyes and feet and hands matter, but the heart is the throne, and the singer asks Jesus to be its king.

Finally the consecration reaches outward to others, “let my life proclaim the good news.” A life wholly given to Jesus does not keep him to itself; it becomes a witness. What the listener is left with is the picture of a complete self-offering, a person asking that everything, eyes, words, mind, hands, feet, heart and whole life, be used for Jesus and lead toward him, so that nothing is held back and every faculty draws him nearer.
