Dangalanna Ba Lyrics
Mama bandala bandala
Mama bandala bandala
Umba bandalada?
Dagalanna bae issara wage
Iwasanna bae me karadare
Mata inna bae pambayek wage
Hera yanna bae hitatai vade
Thani venna bae sakayai aege
Set venna bae venada wage
Hamuvenna bae mithuriyo mage
Mata danenava bandama rage
Obe aale nisa obe ma sira kala
Mage hanguman obe yatapat kala
Nithara keekaru vela inna mama try kala
Eth bandama duka mata theruna
Aya kiwwa man aege pana wage
Aege mulu adare vitarai honde
Pana denna nam mithuriyo ane
Mata innava loke vate
Mata bae...
Dangalanna Ba Lyrics English Translation
I got tied down, tied down
I got tied down, tied down
Have you been tied down too?
I can’t run around like before
I can’t put up with all this trouble
I can’t just sit here like a scarecrow
I can’t walk away, my heart is in pain
I can’t be on my own, she’s suspicious
I can’t go out and meet up like I used to
I can’t see my friends anymore
I can feel it now, the act of getting married
Because of your love you locked me up
You buried all my feelings
I tried to stay obedient all the time
But once you marry, I understood the sorrow
She said I’m like her very life
That her whole love is only for my good
But if I have to give my life for her, oh my friends
I’ve got a whole world out there to live in
I can’t…

Dangalanna Ba Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a young married man having a good laugh at his own expense, complaining about how much has changed since he tied the knot. In Sinhala the word he keeps repeating is “bandala,” literally “tied,” the everyday way people talk about getting married. So the opening, where he keeps saying “I got tied down, tied down” and then turns to a friend and asks “have you been tied down too?”, is a wink as much as a groan. He is not really heartbroken. He is the guy at the table telling his mates how marriage has roped him in.
The whole middle of the song is a list of all the things he used to do and now cannot. He cannot run around and have fun like he did before, he cannot put up with the small daily hassles, and he cannot just laze about like a “pambaya,” a scarecrow, the image of someone idle and useless who just stands there. He cannot slip out and meet his friends because she gets suspicious. Every line lands on the same playful note of “I can’t anymore,” the freedom of single life quietly gone. The line “I can feel it now, the act of getting married” is him realising, a bit too late, what he signed up for.
Then the tone tilts. He admits that her love is what locked him in and pushed his own wants to one side, and that he tried hard to be the obedient husband, but once the wedding was done the weight of it sank in. He repeats her side too, that she calls him her very life, that her whole heart is only for his good. It is affectionate, but he answers it with the punchline of the song: if loving her means handing over his whole life, well, there is a whole wide world out there he still wants to live in. That is where the humour and the truth meet.
What makes it work is that it never tips into bitterness. It is the familiar comedy of a man caught between loving his wife and missing his old freedom, the kind of grumbling every married friend recognises and laughs at. By the time he trails off on “I can’t…”, you understand he is going to keep doing exactly what she wants anyway, and grin about complaining all the while.
