A young man is haunted by a love that has left him, and the whole song is him turning that loss over in his heart late at night. He pictures the one he loved looking back at him with eyes full of longing, the kind of look that feels almost like worship, and then he is alone again, left in a faraway, empty place where she can no longer be seen. The pain she gave him did not just wound him. It settled into him like a song he cannot stop hearing.

What makes the song ache is how he holds the love and the hurt in the same hand. He says the love “killed him yet would not die,” and that line is the whole story. The relationship is over, it has done its damage, and still it will not let go of him. By the last lines he is standing in that rain, hurting, repeating that he burned, burned away, the way you say a person is consumed from the inside by a love they cannot put out.

When he reaches back to “the love songs of old,” he is leaning on the idea that real, lasting love belongs to an earlier, purer time, and he is asking her to sing him one of those, as if the right old song could carry what the two of them could not finish saying. What the listener is left holding is that quiet, lifelong ache of a love that ended but never really left, still glowing behind his eyes, still sweet, still burning.
