Yayata Payana Lyrics English Translation

The full-moon light shining over the field
A drizzle of dew, soaking everything wet
This sorrow that cuts through my heart
I take it in as if it were happiness
The moon that will rise tomorrow night
The deep loneliness that digs into my heart
If you would only take me back
I would go… gathered up by you…
Now and then I pour myself out, hung upon that moon
I would be content just to stay, filling your eyes

Alone in a lonely hut, awake through the night, counting the hours
Because of the look a star gave, shining at the wrong hour
Like a lonely elephant I dreamed it all in my heart, the wonder of the flowering age
Because of you, a love welled up on its own and bound me

While counting stars, I sank into the dream you yourself showed me
Even in comfort, I felt every wish only in the darkness
You turned into a flower-bride and took back the joy you once gave me
Longing for you, the life I gave with all my heart has died

The light shining over the field…

Yayata Payana Song Meaning and Interpretation

A young man sits alone through a full-moon night, and the song is everything that runs through his mind while the rest of the world sleeps. He loved a girl, he gave her his whole heart, and now she is gone from his life. Yet he does not rage or beg. He just sits with the ache and, in a strange and very human way, finds a kind of comfort in carrying it. He says the sorrow that cuts through him is something he takes in “as if it were happiness,” and that line tells you the whole mood of the song. The grief is all he has left of her, so he holds it close rather than push it away.

The pictures he reaches for are the quiet ones of a Sri Lankan night. The full moon over the open paddy field, the fine dew settling and soaking everything, the slow climb of the moon that will rise again tomorrow. In our songs the moon is the steady image for a calm, gentle beauty, and here it doubles as the thing he clings to: he says he pours himself out “hung upon that moon,” as if his only way to be near her now is to lose himself in the night sky. The dew that wets everything is his own quiet weeping, the kind that falls softly and leaves no noise. When he calls himself a “lonely elephant,” that is the old image of a tusker that walks apart from the herd, a creature that carries its strength and its solitude at the same time. That is how he sees himself, full of feeling but completely alone.

He traces how it all began. A single look, a star “shining at the wrong hour,” the glance of the girl that came when he least expected it, and a love welled up in him on its own, without him choosing it. He calls this the “flowering age,” the season of youth when the heart first opens, and he wonders at it even now. The turn comes in the last verse. He says she became a “flower-bride,” she belongs to someone else now, married away, and in becoming another’s she took back the very joy she had once given him. The dream he had been living inside, the dream she herself had shown him, collapses.

The song ends where the cruelest weight lands: the life he laid down for her, given with all his heart, has died. He is still breathing, but the part of him that lived for her is gone. And then the melody circles back to the moon over the field, the same lonely night, no resolution, just a man left alone with a love that outlived its hope. It is a song for anyone who has loved someone they could not keep and learned to live inside the longing instead of getting over it.
