When I see you in my dreams at night, moon,
the goddess of sleep grows jealous,
do you know, my own love,
that she takes you away from me…
Truly, robbed of nothing but the sight of your face, moon,
those two eyes of yours that outshine the stars,
the pure, shy veil of first love,
the way you hint that you will comfort me…
Fairy bird,
it was only of you the moon was speaking,
across the blue sky
let us fly away into the still of the night…//
To weave white flowers through your hair,
to kiss your face and soothe it,
to sit close in your warmth and hold the moment,
I long to paint a picture…
For all the thoughts my heart thinks of you,
for all the wishes my heart wishes for you,
keep my whole life beside you,
and stay close to me, turned into a little smile…
Fairy bird,
it was only of you the moon was speaking,
across the blue sky
let us fly away into the still of the night…//
Fairy bird,
it was only of you the moon was speaking,
across the blue sky
let us fly away into the still of the night……////

Suragana Kirilliye Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is in love, and the girl he loves has taken over even his sleep. The song opens at night, where she keeps appearing in his dreams, and he plays with a sweet little idea: the goddess of sleep herself, the one who is supposed to bring him rest, has grown jealous of how much he thinks about this girl, so she pulls the dream away just to keep them apart. It is a soft, teasing way of saying he can never get enough of her, even when his eyes are closed.
He calls her “suragana kirilliye,” his fairy bird, a tender pet name that mixes two old Sinhala images. “Suragana” is a celestial maiden, the kind of impossibly lovely heavenly woman from folklore, and “kirilli” is a little bird, light and free. Together it means something like “my beautiful little bird from heaven.” When he reaches for the moon to describe her, he is leaning on the oldest comparison in Sinhala song: the moon stands for a calm, glowing beauty, light that softens the night rather than dazzles. He even turns it into a private joke, telling her that when the moon shines, it was really her it was talking about all along. Her eyes, he says, beat the stars, brighter and more alive than anything in that night sky.
The middle of the song is all longing to be close. He wants to thread white flowers through her hair, kiss her face, sit inside her warmth, and he wraps all of it in one wish: to paint a picture of the two of them like that. The painting is the point. He cannot have all of this yet, so he holds it the way you hold a daydream, framing the moment so it stays. Then comes the line that lands hardest. After all the thoughts and wishes piling up in his heart, he asks her to keep his whole life beside her and to stay near him “turned into a little smile.” He is not asking for grand promises, just for her nearness and her smile to be the thing his life rests against.
What stays with you is how gentle the whole thing is. There is no heartbreak here, no fight, just the ache of new love that fills your dreams and makes you want to fly off with someone into the quiet of the night. He invites her up into the blue sky, into the stillness, away from everyone, which is really every young person’s wish to have the one they love all to themselves for a while.
