This is a young man talking to a girl he has already lost, and the whole song is an apology he knows is too late. He calls her sudu nangi, that soft Sinhala endearment for a fair, younger girl you love and want to protect. Hearing it here stings, because protecting her is the one thing he failed to do.

The image he opens with does all the work. She is a flower with a scent of her own, and he could not manage to be even one drop of that scent. In Sinhala song, suwanda (fragrance) stands for the good a person gives out without being asked, the sweetness that reaches you before the person does. She gave him hers freely. What he gave back was fire. Then, having set her heart alight, he hid, and stood next to her burning heart smiling and playing a part, as if nothing was wrong. That single line is the cruellest thing in the song, and he is the one saying it about himself.

The verses fill in how it happened, and none of it is dramatic. She came close with love and gave him advice. He would not listen. She wore herself out worrying about him while he chased dreams in his own head that were never going to include her safely. Then the ordinary justice of it arrives: the sorrow he handed her circled back, surrounded him, and burned. She cried her tears alone, and he hurt her past the point where the word sorry is any use.

The turn comes near the end. She forgave him anyway, from the bottom of her heart, which somehow makes it worse rather than better. He is left with the last line, wondering whether he ever did enough pin (merit, in the Buddhist sense of good deeds earning what comes to you) for her to have been his at all. That question is how a Sri Lankan listener understands loss like this. Not bad luck, not her fault, just a quiet suspicion that he was never good enough to keep what he was given.
