Haa Mal Pipenne Lyrics English Translation

Haa flowers are blooming, the river is flowing, with the rising of the moon
Because of the maiden, the village shines, lit up even more
Haa flowers are blooming, the river is rushing, with the rising of the moon
Because of the maiden, the village shines, lit up even more

A lovely girl born in the village, a graceful, delicate beauty
Your face, your voice, into a poem, into a village song
You have won everyone’s heart

Gold ornaments for your ears and neck, a string of pearls, a silk cloth
None of these are mine to give, my dear, but let me give light to your love
Would you like that, I wonder

To the folk all around, to the little ones, to the people at home
Telling them a little lie, slipping away, will you come to sing a song with me?
My dear, morning and evening, here by this stream, here by this hollow
I will be waiting, and on poya day I will go to worship in the city and come back

Haa Mal Pipenne Song Meaning and Interpretation

A young man from the village is singing to a girl he has fallen for, and the whole song is soaked in the world he lives in, the river, the moonlight, the flowers, the little Buddhist rhythms of village life. He sees her as the thing that makes his whole village shine. When he says the haa flowers are blooming and the river is flowing as the moon rises, he is painting the village at its most beautiful, and then telling her that even all of that only glows because she is in it. In Sinhala love songs the moon is the standing image for a calm, gentle beauty, and here he folds the girl right into that picture so she becomes the reason the place feels alive.

He calls her a girl born in the village, graceful and delicate, and says her face and her voice have turned into a poem, a folk song that everyone loves. That is how a village boy praises someone, not with grand words but by saying she belongs in a song people sing. Then comes the most touching turn. He admits he is poor. The gold earrings, the gold for her neck, the string of pearls, the silk cloth, all the things a man would want to give the girl he loves, none of them are his to give. What he can offer instead is to “give light to her love,” to cherish her and brighten her life, and he asks softly whether that would be enough for her. It is a quiet, honest moment about loving someone when you have nothing in your hands but feeling.

The last verse is shy and sweet. He wants her to make up a small excuse to the elders, the children, the people at home, and slip away to sing with him by the stream. He promises he will be waiting there morning and evening, by this little stream, by this hollow in the land. The last line places him fully inside village faith, on poya day, the full-moon Buddhist observance day, he will go into town to worship and come straight back to her. It is his way of saying his life runs on simple, steady things, the river, the moon, the temple, and he wants her to be one of them. What you are left holding is the tenderness of a poor young man with nothing to offer but a true heart, hoping that is enough.
