Nil Nuwan Pinbarai Lyrics
Nil nuwan pinbarai
Rosa thol, lassanai
Hima hansiye, oba nil ahasa wage
Ahasa pibidu, dewliye
Sayura kelambu kinduriye
Mage raththaran, oba mini pahana wage
Dedune negi, aawe mamai
Madha pawane weli awe mamai
Sansaraye aawemi priye
Saththakai, oba magei
Aththamai, maa obe
Mage aadare obatamai priye...
Ma tharam senehasin
Kisikenek na lowe, na rattharan
Oyata aadare...
Unusum haadu wessen sansa
Kanduluata sathutak ek kala
Ape aadare sadahata pawathinneNil Nuwan Pinbarai Lyrics English Translation
Your blue eyes are blessed
Rosy lips, so beautiful
Snow-white swan, you are like the blue sky
A goddess blossomed from the sky
A celestial maiden who stirred the ocean
My darling, you are like a jeweled lamp
I am the one who rose up and came to you
I am the one who came riding the gentle breeze
I came to you through saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth), my love
It is certain, you are mine
It is true, I am yours
My love is yours alone, my love
No one in this world
loves you as much as I do, my darling
The love I have for you
With a rain of warm kisses, soothing
I turned your tears into joy
Our love will last forever

Nil Nuwan Pinbarai Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is pouring out everything he feels for the woman he loves, and he starts the only way a smitten heart knows how, by listing the things about her that undo him. Her blue eyes, her rosy lips, the way she carries herself. He cannot find ordinary words for her, so he reaches for the biggest, most beautiful images he has.
Those images are worth slowing down on, because they carry weight a Sinhala listener feels straight away. He calls her a “hima hansa,” a snow-white swan, which in Sinhala writing stands for purity and grace. He says she is like the blue sky, open and clear and out of reach. He calls her a “kinnari,” a celestial maiden from old legend, the kind of beauty said to stir the very ocean. And he calls her a “mini pahana,” a lamp set with jewels, the glow that lights up his world. None of these are random compliments. Each one lifts her out of the everyday and places her somewhere close to divine.
Then the song deepens. He says he came to her through saṃsāra, the long cycle of births and rebirths that runs through Sri Lankan Buddhist belief. This is the most loaded line in the whole song. He is not saying he simply met her and fell in love. He is saying he has been traveling lifetime after lifetime, carried on the breeze, and all of it was to find her again. That belief, that two people are bound across many lives, is one of the most romantic ideas in Sinhala love song, and it is how he turns a crush into something that feels like destiny. So when he says “you are mine, I am yours,” it lands as fact, not a wish.
He closes by promising that no one anywhere could love her the way he does, and that even her tears he answers with warmth, with a rain of soft kisses that turns her sadness into joy. By the last line the feeling has settled into something steady and sure. Our love will last forever, he says, and after everything he has laid out, you believe him.
