A young man had let himself believe he and the girl he loved would walk a long road together, all the way through life. Then, partway along, she changed and turned away, and the song is what he is left holding once she is gone. He isn’t angry. He’s just stunned by a grief he can’t carry, asking her, almost gently, why the heart that loved her had to be repaid with this kind of pain.

In the middle the song turns inward, the way we do when someone leaves and we start looking for reasons. He talks himself through it: maybe she was never meant to be his, maybe being apart and hurting is simply his fate, maybe her heart just couldn’t recognise how much he loved her. That word for fate, iranama, carries the Sinhala and Buddhist sense of a destiny you can’t argue with, so it isn’t really comfort. It’s a man trying to make peace with something that still doesn’t make sense to him.

The most tender turn comes near the end. On every lonely night her memory comes back and his eyes fill, and he admits the hard truth out loud, we are two separate people now, so where did your love go? But instead of bitterness, he ends by telling her that in his own heart nothing has changed, she still lives there, loved exactly as before. That is the ache the song leaves you with. She walked away, and he is still standing where they parted, loving her the same.
