You, the blessed one

A young man is talking to the girl who left him, and he is still standing exactly where she left him. The day she turned cold on him has not faded at all. He says he remembers it like it happened today, which is how grief actually works, one afternoon stays fresh while years pass around it.

The sharpest image in the song is the coin. He asks why she loved him like a coin that was no longer worth anything, the kind of note or coin that gets pulled out of circulation. It still looks like money, you can still hold it, but nobody will take it. That is how he feels about the love she gave him. It was real while she was handing it over, and then one day it was simply not accepted anywhere.

What lifts this song above ordinary heartbreak is what he decides to do with all that hurt. He says he will offer a flower in her name. Any Sri Lankan listener sees this immediately, a man at the temple laying flowers at the shrine and dedicating the merit of that act to someone else. It is one of the gentlest things you can do for a person here, and you usually do it for family, or for the dead. He is doing it for the woman who broke him, and his wish is simply that she ends up happier and better off than she is right now. No bitterness in it at all.
