Sandun Perera

Sandun Perera (සඳුන් පෙරේරා) is a Sri Lankan pop singer and songwriter, born in 1994, who rose through the YouTube era of Sinhala music as one of its most-streamed contemporary voices. He is known for emotive ballads such as “Pooja Karannam”, “Ayeth Warak”, and “Godak Adarei”, and for a career that began behind the microphone before it ever reached the stage.

From lyricist and dummy singer to recording artist

Sandun Perera entered the industry around 2015 as a lyricist, then worked as a “dummy singer” for production houses, recording guide vocals so composers could demonstrate a song before a named vocalist cut the final version. That backstage role ended almost by accident: a guide recording of “Thaniwennepa” was released, drew an audience on its own, and turned the writer into a performer. The track survives on Lyrics-lk as Thaniwennepa Mese Sadakal Oya.

Breakthrough songs

His commercial breakthrough came with Ayeth Warak (Thibunanam Hugak), which gathered millions of YouTube views within weeks of release. The follow-up, Pooja Karannam (released in 2016, also titled Pinwantha Wu Oya), became one of his signature hits and a fixture on the platform’s trending list. He continued the run with Godak Adarei (ගොඩක් ආදරෙයි), Adaraya Agamaki, and Dukak Danenna Epa, several of which charted on YouTube without an accompanying music video.

Sandun Perera’s appeal rests on a soft, confiding delivery and lyrics that lean toward the reflective and the philosophical, a quality Sri Lankan listeners often single out in his work. Alongside his own releases he has kept writing for other artists and contributing teledrama theme songs, including the theme for Susumaka Ima. As a writer his words have been sung by collaborators including Tehan Perera, and he appears among the voices on the ensemble single Sinha Wise.
