Mandaram Wehi Wetena (Amma) Lyrics English Translation

In the drizzling rain, in the cold of evening,
the warmth that wrapped around me was you.
You are my mother.
In the dark night, with the moon and its shadows above,
you were the moon that gave me light.
You are my mother…

You turned your own blood into milk and raised me with love, my mother.
You carried me ten months and bore that weight through a life full of hardship.
Mother, I love you. You are the spring that keeps my life flowing.
Mother, you are my queen. Through saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth), you are beside me.

On the stormy sea, in a boat with its sails torn,
you are the mast, you are the shelter that protects me.
You are my mother.
When thirst pours down, in the blazing midday heat,
you are the shade, you are the cool breeze.
You are my mother…

Mandaram Wehi Wetena (Amma) Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a son’s tribute to his mother, the kind of song Sri Lankans grow up singing about the woman who raised them. There is no romance and no story to chase here. It is simply one child trying to put into words everything a mother is, and reaching for the biggest images he can find to do it.

The whole song works by setting up a hardship and then naming the mother as the thing that saves him from it. In the cold evening rain, she was the warmth around him. In the dark night, she was the moon that gave him light. Out at sea in a broken boat with its sail in pieces, she is the mast that holds and the shelter that keeps him safe. In the punishing midday sun, she is the shade and the cool breeze. Every verse is the same quiet promise from a different angle, that whatever the world threw at him, his mother stood between him and it.

A few lines carry weight a non Sri Lankan reader would miss. “You turned your own blood into milk and raised me with love” is a very old Sinhala way of speaking about a mother’s sacrifice, the idea that she gave her own body to feed her child. “You carried me ten months” counts pregnancy the Sri Lankan way, by lunar months, and ties straight into the line about bearing that weight through a hard life. When he calls her his queen and says she has been beside him through saṃsāra, the Buddhist cycle of birth after birth, he is saying the bond is not just for this lifetime, it stretches across every life he has lived and will live.

What the song leaves you holding is gratitude, plain and full. He calls her the spring that keeps his life flowing, the source he draws from. By the end you understand that he is not describing one kind thing his mother did. He is saying she was the warmth, the light, the shelter and the shade, all of it, every time he needed her.
