Obe aadare ....... manamaali
Manamali Lyrics English Translation
You who own my love,
the bride in my eyes.
You who own your own love,
today you are his bride.
You looked at me with loving eyes,
but you never gave me a sign.
You held my love close,
but you never called out to me.
You who own my love……..
We came close and loved through the night, all in a dream.
I dressed you up myself, slipping rings onto your fingers.
You who own my love……..
You rose at night like the moon,
and we drew close in love.
But the tender, quiet places of my love
you never came to understand.
You who own my love,
today my bride.
Your love ……. bride

Manamali Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is in love with a girl who has married someone else, and this song is him holding on to the only version of her that was ever his, the one in his dreams. He keeps calling her “manamali,” the bride, even as he admits the hard truth in the same breath: she is his bride only in his eyes, while in real life, today, she is another man’s bride.
The ache here is gentle rather than bitter. He remembers how she would look at him with loving eyes, how she seemed to hold his love close, and yet she never gave him a clear sign, never called out to him, never said the word that would have made it real. So everything that should have happened in life happened instead in sleep. The heart of the song is that one dream image: “I dressed you up myself, slipping rings onto your fingers.” In Sri Lankan weddings the bride is adorned and the ring goes on the finger, so this line is him quietly marrying her in his imagination, giving himself the wedding he never got to have.
The moon does its usual work in Sinhala song here. When he says she rose at night like the moon, he means she came to him soft and calming, the way moonlight fills a dark room, a beauty that soothes rather than dazzles. For a few lines they are close and in love, and then the song turns on its saddest admission: the tender, hidden corners of his love, she never understood them. He gave her the deepest part of himself and it went unnoticed.
What you are left holding is a man who has lost the girl but cannot stop calling her his bride. He knows she belongs to someone else now, and still, in the last lines, he reaches for that word one more time, because in the only place it was ever true, his own heart, she will always be the bride he dressed and married in a dream.
