Dangakara Handakari Obe Kammul Lyrics English Translation

You mischievous, lovely girl, softer than your cheeks
I know there are no flower petals
Your gem-blue eyes cast their spell and drove my heart mad
I say it… and you know it..

You became a beautiful flower
that filled my chest right up
A love with no end.. and no one else knows it…
For as long as I live.. you were given to me, I say..

Filling my sweet life right up
becoming a young goddess
A life with no end.. and no one else knows it..
From birth to birth through saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth).. you were given to me, I say…

You mischievous, lovely girl, softer than your cheeks
I know there are no flower petals
Your gem-blue eyes cast their spell and drove my heart mad
I say it… and you know it..

You mischievous, lovely girl, softer than your cheeks
I know there are no flower petals
Your gem-blue eyes cast their spell and drove my heart mad
I say it… and you know it..

Dangakara Handakari Obe Kammul Song Meaning and Interpretation

A young man is telling the girl he loves how completely she has taken him over, and he is half teasing, half spellbound while he does it. He calls her mischievous and lovely in the same breath, the kind of girl who knows exactly what her smile is doing to him, and right away he reaches for the softest thing he can think of to describe her. Even flower petals, he says, are not as soft as her cheeks. In Sinhala love songs the flower petal is the usual yardstick for tenderness and delicacy, so when he says she is softer than that, he is telling her she is gentler than the gentlest thing he knows.

Then he gets to her eyes, and that is what really undid him. He calls them gem-blue, mini nil, the deep blue of a sapphire, and he says their spell drove his heart mad. He is not exaggerating to be polite. One look from those eyes is the whole reason he can no longer think straight, and the little refrain “and you know it” is him admitting she can see exactly what she has done to him.

The middle of the song is where the feeling deepens from a crush into something he wants to last forever. She has become a flower that fills his chest, and his love for her has no end. He keeps saying no one else knows, which is the sweet, private feeling of early love, that what is happening between the two of them is theirs alone. He calls her a young goddess, dew duwak, literally a daughter of the gods, the highest thing a Sri Lankan man can call the woman he adores. And he reaches past this one life entirely. Sasarin sasara, from saṃsāra to saṃsāra, means across every rebirth in the long Buddhist cycle of lives. Saying he was given her from birth to birth is his way of promising this is not a feeling for now but a bond meant to follow them through life after life. That single line lifts a simple love song into something close to a vow.

What the listener is left holding is the warmth of a man who has found the person he wants forever and cannot quite believe his luck. The teasing at the start and the talk of lifetimes at the end are the same feeling, just turned up, the wonder of looking at someone and thinking you were always meant to be mine.
