Budun Thun Warak Lyrics English Translation

Sri Lanka, the blessed island the Buddha visited three times,
the land where children grew up under the shelter of the Dhamma and the monks,
what is this hot ruin that has come upon blessed Lanka,
they kill people for a pittance now, without the slightest fear.

Sri Lanka, the blessed island the Buddha visited three times,
the land where children grew up under the shelter of the Dhamma and the monks,
what is this hot ruin that has come upon blessed Lanka,
they kill people for a pittance now, without the slightest fear.

Before leaving for school, he worshipped and took their blessing,
and as is the custom, he set off on his way to school.
By then the cruel hand of death was already lying in wait,
and Saman Kumara knew nothing at all of it.

Saman Kumara was the first in his class,
little Saman Kumara even served as the monitor,
the whole school shone with the pupil Saman Kumara.
Why did you not come to school today, Saman Kumara?

A letter came: do not bring the police to the house,
leave one and a half lakhs at the school,
otherwise the child will meet his death.
How is a mother’s heart to bear such a thing.

They wrote out the letters and, troubling the child,
they forced them sent to Siriwardana the shopkeeper.
But even in that moment the news was that the child had already been killed,
the doctor learned this only later, after examination.

This crime, alas, reached the ears of the law,
the police suspected a friend of the family.
When they caught him and questioned him for the facts,
he himself laid bare the root of the crime.

In the night the police climbed to the mountain range,
in a thick forest, at a forked rock, Saman was found.
This heart-shaking news came out,
they had crushed his windpipe and killed him.

“Come, son, let me give you a ride,” they said, and put him on the bicycle,
they took Saman away, pretending kindness with their feet.
Men with no heart, in love with money,
why did they end an innocent child’s life like this?

People who never saw the babies crying for milk,
these ones who see no difference between a sin and a merit,
born into this world like beasts, alas,
it is they who become the curse upon this blessed Lanka.

Sri Lanka, the blessed island the Buddha visited three times,
the land where children grew up under the shelter of the Dhamma and the monks,
what is this hot ruin that has come upon blessed Lanka,
they kill people for a pittance now, without the slightest fear.

Budun Thun Warak Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a grief-stricken protest song, the kind of ballad that tells a true and terrible story and then asks the whole country to look at what it has become. It is built around the murder of a schoolboy named Saman Kumara, kidnapped and killed for ransom, and the singer uses that one death to mourn something larger: the loss of the country’s conscience. There is no love story here and no single heartbroken narrator. The voice is closer to a village elder or a witness standing up at a funeral, telling the facts plainly and letting the horror speak for itself.

The chorus is the heart of it, and to feel it you have to know what the words carry. Sri Lankans are taught from childhood that the Buddha visited the island three times, so calling Lanka “the blessed island the Buddha visited three times” and “the land where children grew up in the shelter of the Dhamma and the monks” is not just decoration. It is the image of a gentle, sheltered, sacred country, the place every parent believes their child is safe. Against that the singer sets one blunt, modern horror: “they kill people for a pittance now, without the slightest fear.” The phrase “tuttu dekata,” which I have rendered as “for a pittance,” literally means “for two cents,” the smallest worthless coin. That gap, a holy island where a life is now worth two cents, is the whole accusation of the song.

From there the story walks forward like a news report turned into mourning. The boy worships his parents and takes their blessing before school, as Sri Lankan children do, never knowing death is already waiting for him. He was first in his class, the school monitor, the pride of the place, and the line “Why did you not come to school today, Saman Kumara?” hits like a roll call answered by silence. Then comes the ransom letter, the demand for one and a half lakhs (a lakh is a hundred thousand rupees), the mother’s heart that cannot bear it, and the gut-punch detail that the child was already dead while the family was still being squeezed for money. The killers, men “with no heart, in love with money,” lured him onto a bicycle with false kindness and strangled him at a forked rock deep in the forest.

The last verse turns from the crime to a kind of curse. These men, the singer says, never knew the tenderness of babies crying for milk, they see no difference between sin and merit, they were “born into this world like beasts,” and it is people like them who are the real curse upon this blessed land. That is where the song leaves you, not with comfort but with a question pressed into your chest: how did the sheltered, sacred island of childhood faith become a place where a bright, loved little boy can be taken and killed for a handful of money. The song refuses to let that pass quietly, and that refusal is its whole purpose.
