Lak Amma

A day came, toward a single aim in the struggle,
seeking a pure golden land where no war would rise,
destroying the jackals who defiled the unity of the Lankan nation,
rise up, to breathe life back into Mother Earth

Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, stirring up every people,
sowing hatred with bombs and swords and clubs,
driving away for good the thirty-three crore guardian gods,
Mother Lanka was made a single clot of red, bloody tears

On this human earth that guarded the Dhamma, to be guarded by the Dhamma,
seizing youthful strength unknowingly by the power of the true teaching,
locking caste divisions away forever, out of the politicians’ grip,
take the front line, bearing the struggle’s flags in all four directions

Remember until you die, children of Lanka,
learn well the game of the jackals who come in a lion’s guise,
do not be divided, all of you, under the common human banner,
even those who rule cannot sell their deeds for money

This is a rousing unity anthem, a collective song led by Sanka Dineth with a large team of artists, and it belongs unmistakably to the era of the aragalaya, Sri Lanka’s mass people’s struggle. It opens as a call to arms of the peaceful kind: a day has come, it says, to seek a pure golden land with no war, to destroy the jackals who defiled the nation’s unity, and to rise up and breathe life back into Mother Earth.

The middle names the wound directly. Someone stirred up every community against the others, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, and Burgher, sowing hatred with bombs, swords and clubs, until lak amma, Mother Lanka herself, was reduced to a single clot of red, bloody tears, her very guardian gods driven away. It is an unflinching account of how one shared country was torn along its communal lines.

The song’s answer is unity and youth. It calls the young to the front line of the struggle, flags raised in all four directions, to lock caste divisions away and slip free of the politicians’ grip. Its sharpest warning is an image: learn the game of the jackals who come dressed in a lion’s guise, false patriots who wear the nation’s own symbol while dividing it. Children of Lanka, it urges, do not let yourselves be split; stand together under one common human banner. It is a passionate, angry, hopeful anthem for a country trying to heal itself.
