seizing youthful strength unknowingly by the power of the true teaching,
locking caste divisions away forever, out of the politicians’ grip,
take the front line, bearing the struggle’s flags in all four directions

learn well the game of the jackals who come in a lion’s guise,
do not be divided, all of you, under the common human banner,
even those who rule cannot sell their deeds for money

Someone stirred up every community against the others, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, and Burgher, sowing hatred with bombs, swords and clubs, until lak amma, Mother Lanka herself, was reduced to a single clot of red, bloody tears, her very guardian gods driven away. It is an unflinching account of how one shared country was torn along its communal lines.

The song’s answer is unity and youth. It calls the young to the front line of the struggle, flags raised in all four directions, to lock caste divisions away and slip free of the politicians’ grip. Its sharpest warning is an image: learn the game of the jackals who come dressed in a lion’s guise, false patriots who wear the nation’s own symbol while dividing it.
