Numba Sithata Pamini Da Sita Lyrics
Nuba sitata pemini da sita
Nethu dakinu risi e ruva
Sita thavama bala hidi nuba
Adath pemina nathuwata//
Aruna gevi gos netha
Dan andura uda wuuwata
Nubata hakiya pera lesama
Yali eliya ragena ennata
Sita nithara dakina e ruva
Netha kalak nodeka hitiata
Ada nethath hetath me lesa
Nuba nisa bala himi mama///
Numba Sithata Pamini Da Sita Lyrics English Translation
Since the day you came into my heart
my eyes long to see that face of yours
My heart is still sitting here waiting for you
even though you didn’t come today either
The dawn hasn’t gone for good
though darkness has settled in now
You can still, just like before,
bring the light back again
That face my heart sees all the time
even though my eyes haven’t seen it in so long
Whether you come today or tomorrow, like this
because of you, I keep on waiting

Numba Sithata Pamini Da Sita Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is still waiting for someone who didn’t come. She entered his heart on a particular day, and ever since then his eyes have wanted nothing but to look at her face. The day passed, evening came, and she never showed, yet he stays right where he is, telling himself she might still arrive. That is the whole shape of the song, the quiet, stubborn patience of someone who has decided not to give up on a person he loves.
What makes it tender is how he refuses to read the darkness as an ending. When he says the dawn has not gone for good even though night has fallen, he is talking about more than the sky. In Sinhala song, light and dawn stand for hope and for the loved one’s presence, and darkness stands for her absence and his loneliness. So when he tells her she can bring the light back again, just like before, he is saying that her return would lift the gloom off his whole life. The night he is sitting in is not only the evening she missed, it is the long stretch of being without her.
There is a gentle ache running underneath the patience. He admits his eyes have not seen her in a very long time, and yet the face is never gone, because his heart keeps seeing it even when she is not there. That gap between the heart that holds her close and the eyes that have been left empty is the heart of the song. It is the feeling of carrying someone with you while you wait for them to actually arrive.
By the last lines he stops bargaining with time. Today or tomorrow, it does not matter to him anymore, he will keep waiting either way, and he will keep waiting because of her, for her sake. There is no anger in it and no despair, just a soft, steady devotion that says, I am still here, and I will be here when you come.
