Nadee Ganga Lyrics
Nadi ganga taranaye
Sarisara seda maruthe
Indrakeelayak se
Nosalee ma yana mawathe
Sinha lokaye
Sinha lokaye
Sulan ralle davatila
Manda marutaye
Soya yannemi
Gala ena mandakini
Hamba yami hamu vena thura
Jivithe uthum pathuman ha
Nirathuruwa abhimaanayen
Mammula nove kisida
Javaya ma sathu ve
Diriya gannemi
Gala yana dahasak nadi
Bala siti ma ena thura
Nirathuruwa abhimaanayen
Nadi ganga taranaye...
Nadee Ganga Lyrics English Translation
Crossing rivers and streams,
roaming through the fierce winds,
like an indrakeela (the firm-planted pillar),
unshaken on the path I walk,
in the world of the lion,
in the world of the lion.
Wrapped in the gusting wind,
in the slow breeze,
I go searching,
for the flowing Milky Way streaming down.
I chase on until I find it,
along with life’s noblest hopes,
always, with pride.
I am never lost,
the strength is mine to keep.
I draw my courage
from the thousand rivers flowing on,
that wait for me to come,
always, with pride.
Crossing rivers and streams…

Nadee Ganga Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a song about pressing forward and never giving up. There is no lover and no heartbreak here. The voice is that of someone setting out on a hard journey, crossing rivers, walking into strong winds, and refusing to be turned back. It reads like an anthem of resolve, the kind of song you put on when you need to feel braver than you are.
The strongest image is the indrakeela. In Sinhala this is the great pillar or post driven deep into the ground, the thing that stays rooted no matter how hard the wind blows against it. When the singer says he stands “like an indrakeela, unshaken on the path I walk,” he is saying nothing can move him off his road. The fierce winds and gusting storms all through the song stand for the troubles and setbacks that come at anyone trying to get somewhere in life.
“Sinha Lokaya,” the world of the lion, points to Sri Lanka, the land of the Sinhala people whose very name carries the lion. Setting the journey in the land of the lion gives it a quiet patriotic pride, the courage being praised is the courage of his own people. The “flowing Milky Way” he goes searching for is the high, almost out-of-reach goal he is chasing, something bright and far above him that he keeps moving toward anyway.
By the last verse the doubt is gone. He says plainly that he is never lost, that the strength is his to keep, and that he draws his courage from the thousand rivers flowing on, rivers that seem to wait for him to reach them. What the listener is left holding is that steady, proud confidence: keep walking, keep your feet under you, and the path will carry you where you mean to go.
