Two children who grew up singing together, and a promise one of them made when he was small enough that nobody else took it seriously. That is where this song begins. He calls her Indumathi, and he calls her umba, the familiar “you” a village boy uses with a girl he has known his whole life, so you can hear from the first line that these two go back further than any suitor does.

He remembers that promise “like the sun and the moon”. The sun and the moon are the two things that never leave the sky, the standing Sinhala image for what holds no matter how many years pass, so a word given to a little girl still binds him as a grown man. Her face, he says, is drawn on his heart, and in all the time since he has never seen another like it.

Then the song turns, and the rest of it is about a proposal that is not his. The aunts and uncles arriving with kadamalu, bundles of cloth, are the groom’s side on a formal marriage visit, and “coming to see the bride” is the old custom of a family arriving to look over the girl they hope to take home as a daughter-in-law. He points out that they are claiming close kinship, which matters here, because marriage between cousins was the respectable match in village Sri Lanka and a relative with a proposal is hard for parents to turn down. His answer is one small, urgent instruction. Give them no word. Say nothing they can hold you to.

The last verse is his counter-offer. Crowds will come to lead her away, and he asks her to sit tight a little longer, because he will arrive at an auspicious hour with the thalipili, the wedding jewellery a groom brings when he claims his bride. The mangala mohotha, the moment fixed by the astrologer, is what makes a Sinhala wedding real, so naming it is his way of saying this is a wedding he means to hold, not talk.

What stays with you is how little he can actually do. He cannot outbid the visiting family or argue with custom, and all he has is a childhood memory and a plea for a few more days of silence. Sweeter than a proposal, and worth nothing in the room where the elders decide.
