It is the middle of a working day out in the paddy fields, and the man singing has been at it long enough to be worn out. Then he looks up and sees her in the distance, stepping along the niyara, the narrow raised ridge of earth between the flooded fields that is the only path across. She is picking her way along it with his food in her hands, and just the sight of her takes the tiredness out of him.

He calls her Manike, which means “gem”, one of the warmest things a Sinhala man can call the woman he loves. The word sits perfectly in this scene, because everything around him is already gold. The paddy is heading, the heavy ears of grain bending over, and he says they are bending toward her. That is a farmer’s way of paying a compliment. His crop, which is the whole year’s work and the whole year’s security, leans in the direction she is walking.

He keeps the gold going in the next line, saying that from far off she looks like a figure cast in gold, the way a gilded statue catches the light at the end of a long field. It is the distance that does it. She is too far away to see clearly, so she registers as a shining shape moving across all that ripening yellow, and by the time she reaches him the sighs he has been carrying have settled.

Then comes the detail that gives the song its heart. What she is carrying is the ambula, the midday meal cooked at home and walked out to whoever is working the field, and he notes that she made it with her own hands. Nobody sent it with a child, nobody left it at the edge of the land. She came herself. That small daily act is what he is calling his good fortune, and all he asks for in the last verse is more of the same: come like this every day, smiling.

This is village love at its plainest and most secure, with no separation in it and nothing to ache over. A man stands in his own field, watching his woman cross the bunds with his lunch, and finds that he has everything he wants. Older Sri Lankan listeners hear their own parents in it, and that is a good part of why the song has lasted.
